Navigating the Freelance Lifestyle in the World of Writing, Editing, and Proofreading Services

Well, hello there!

My name is Tina, a freelance proofreader and writer, and I’d like to share with you my brand new blog, The Proof Pages. I am beyond thrilled to extend a warm welcome to you and invite you to join me on the exciting new journey I’ve chosen to take—ten years before retirement... omg!

As an administrative professional, I have over twenty years of experience in writing, editing, and proofreading corporate materials. Recently, I made the difficult decision to leave the corporate environment once and for all to pursue a freelance career in writing, editing, and proofreading services.

It was a huge and very scary decision, but let's face it—who wants to sell their precious time to line someone else's pockets? Why go through the daily grind of rush-hour traffic, turning a ten-minute drive into a forty-five-minute commute when you could easily book a flight and work from a beach if you wanted to? I had my fill of corporate politics and disrespect and decided to take a chance on enjoying life while I still can. That's way more important than being stuck in a cubicle for eight hours a day, forty hours a week, month after month, year after year. Uh uh. Nope!

So, here I am!

In my free time, I enjoy writing songs and dedicating at least a little time every week to one of my ongoing works of fiction. Currently, I live in Toronto, Canada, along with my two adorable kitties, a turtle, and the spider that lives on the painting over the couch in my living room. We’re pretty happy here, but we’d like to move east in the nearest possible future, to live by the beach, near the ocean. The mere thought of that brings a smile to my face and is one of the primary motivations behind my decision to break free from the corporate world and pursue a freelance career.

More about that in a minute, but let’s shift the focus away from me and talk about the blog!

Within The Proof Pages, my goal is to create a supportive, informative, and inclusive space where we can explore the freelancing lifestyle together. Whether you’re an aspiring writer, a seasoned editor, a meticulous proofreader, or simply someone with a love for words, the intention of this blog is to provide valuable insights, resources, and inspiration to enhance your craft and elevate your freelancing journey. Hopefully, we’ll have some fun along the way too!

So, what can you expect from The Proof Pages? Well, I aim to stand out by providing you with a diverse and engaging selection of articles, practical tutorials, and carefully curated content.

First and foremost, you can expect to find lots of practical tips, strategies, and techniques to enhance your writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Look out for articles covering grammar, punctuation, and syntax, as well as style guides and different writing techniques. I’ll also be sure to share the great resources I use and any helpful ones I stumble upon! If it helps you to write, edit, or proofread better, you’re likely to find information about it here! I hope you find it all as exciting as I do because there will be quizzes along the way!

I am incredibly fortunate to not only have acquired skills and experience but also possess a natural ability for proofreading. So, that’s my vehicle. My driving force, though, is the freelancing lifestyle, so we’ll be talking a lot about that!

For instance, we'll discuss the amazing freedom and flexibility it offers, empowering you to create your work-life balance—tailored to your own needs and aspirations. Part of the flexibility of freelancing is that there are so many different ways to earn income. The Proof Pages will offer resources to help you determine whether the freelancing lifestyle is for you, and if so, whether you’re ready to go “full-time” or if you’d just like to establish a side hustle for some extra spending money!

Success isn’t just about setting up a business though. Without the right mindset, a success mindset, how can your business truly thrive? If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect others to believe in you? The Proof Pages believes in you, and you’ll find lots of self-empowering articles that help you believe in you too!

Freelancing does come with its challenges too, and we’ll delve into those. We’ll explore topics such as time management, client acquisition, and maintaining a stable income in the ever-evolving freelance landscape. And let’s not forget the technology aspect, which could easily fill an entire blog on its own! (It almost did, but that’s a story for another time.)

I guess when you put it all together, I’m going to use The Proof Pages to document my freelancing journey. I hope you’ll love the resources I share, whether it’s the word-nerd posts or insights into freelance opportunities and lifestyle. I am so very excited to embark on this journey with you and share my knowledge, experiences, and even a few missteps along the way (hopefully not too many).

And that brings me to my favourite part of this article because, to celebrate my first blog post, I’d like to give you a small gift: my first digital product!

The Editing and Revising Checklist for Writers can be used as a final review of your writing work before calling it complete! Let me know in the comments what you think about it (but please go easy—it’s my first one, and I did give it to you for free, after all!)

Growth and success are at the heart of The Proof Pages blog so I encourage you to actively engage!
